SETI is an acronymn for the words "search for extraterrestrial intelligence." This is a scientific project and has expanded over the years to a search for life originating other than on Earth, whether within our own solar system or beyond. It is not a figment of the imagination of the type that most UFO believers espouse; theirs is based supposition and fantasy without foundation. The SETI objective is based on evidence, in meteor and comet study, in astronomy and the monitoring of stellar radio signals for coherent patterns. The project has earned recognition in both the scientific community at large as well as with NASA, a fact for which they are justifably proud, precisely because they brook no compromise to hard replicable findings, the basis for scientific investigation.

The SETI community at Yahoo! is an extention of the organization although not directly affiliated with it. It is a meeting place for those interested in the SETI project, astronomy generally, and the discussion of findings [paraphrase lehat1].

SETI was founded as "listed" in the category of Science > Astronomy > SETI (Search for Extraterrestrial Intelligence) on August 21, 1998, making it one of the oldest online communities in the Yahoo! system. The membership currently numbers well over two thousand, which may be testimony to the interest of the Internet community in pursuing extraterrestrial intellengence from a scientific rather than science fictional approach.
